We all know that sugary drinks are a serious threat to obesity. There are many reasons to avoid soda, even a variety of diets. At the very least, make it a rare occasion. Here are a few.
It’s bad for your teeth
Any dentist will tell you that baking soda is bad for your teeth. Even if you drink soda without sugar, the acid content can destroy the enamel.
Even diet sodas can increase the risk of diabetes
According to French researchers, drinking a 12-ounce serving of artificially sweetened soda each week can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes by 33%. Since most people don’t stop at one serving per week, the actual risk of diabetes can be much higher.
The study, conducted by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, involved 66,118 middle-aged women whose eating habits and health were monitored from 1993 to 2007.
Interestingly, the researchers found that participants who drank “light” or “diet” drinks had a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who drank regular sugary sodas. People who drank natural fruit juices instead were not at additional risk.
May increase the risk of depression
A January 2013 study of over 260,000 people found a link between sugary sodas and depression. Diet sodas can even make things worse.
The study, which was presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting in March, involved 263,925 people aged 50 to 71. Researchers tracked their consumption of beverages such as soda, tea, coffee, and other soft drinks from 1995 to 1996. Ten years later, they were asked if they had been diagnosed with depression since 2000. They found more than 11,300 such diagnoses.
Some baking soda contains toxic flame retardants
Several popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use a toxic flame retardant chemical to prevent the artificial flavor from separating from the remaining liquid. Symptoms of bromide poisoning can be caused by brominated vegetable oil, which is also sometimes listed as BVO in sodas and sports drinks, such as memory loss and skin damage, and problems with the nervous system.
Carbonation can lead to kidney stones
Soft drinks, especially cola, are high in phosphoric acid, which is closely linked to other kidney problems and kidney stones. The danger was whether the pop sugar included regular or artificial sugar. Phosphoric acid gives food a tangy flavor and gives the drink the flavor you associate with pop music. Phosphoric acid also has preservative properties and acts as a slight obstacle. As they do their job of filtering waste, the kidneys can be stressed by the acid if they are eaten regularly.
Soda causes dehydration
You drink because you are thirsty. In the case of soda, it could be because you need caffeine or sugar. These two ingredients cause dehydration. So every time you drink a soft drink to quench your thirst, you really get thirstier. Not to mention, if you drink soda, it’s probably a substitute for your water intake.
Baking soda weakens bones and increases the risk of osteoporosis
Frequent consumption of soft drinks can also increase the risk of osteoporosis, especially in people who drink soft drinks instead of calcium-rich milk. A large population (especially cola) in children is a significant risk factor for calcification of growing bones.
